Boarding Schools in the USA, Student Experiences
Interview-Glenholme School-A Devereux Center
Mercy Paine, from Switzerland, is an eight grader at The Glenholme School A-Devereux Center in Washington, Connecticut.
Why did you decide to attend boarding school in the U.S.A.
In the U.S.A., everyone speaks English which I am fluent in.
How did you and your parents choose your school
The Glenholme School is close to New York City, where my father visits for work. When he’s working in New York, I have the chance to spend the weekend with him.
What do you like best?
The class size is small and there is always a teacher or instructor available to help. Having many friends in my class also makes the work more interesting.
What do you miss most?
I miss my cat, Kirra, the most. She’s only 18 months old and when I’m home she follows me around.
How has this program helped you to handle future study at a U.S. university?
I have certainly improved my typing skills, since every student here has a laptop and all of our classwork is completed on the computer. I have also developed more of an interest in Math and Science. I’m aware my behavior has improved even though I have to make a greater effort in this.
How have you adjusted to a different educational system?
Being in a boarding school has been an adjustment. My parents are not always around and it’s not the same as attending a regular school or being tutored.
What are your activities?
There are a lot of different after-school programs. “Mad Scientist” is a lot of fun, we do science experiments and projects which I really like. “Extreme Makeover” is a fun painting class.
How easy is making friends?
It was easy to make friends at my school. Everyone was friendly on my first day. I have a lot of friends now.
What will you remember most?
The school carnival. There were lots of great games and I was the best at apple bobbing. That was a great day.
What is your advice to other students who are considering studying in the U.S.A?
Bring some of your special things because you just can’t go home to get them. I brought my books, pictures, sheets, and my favorite stuffed animal.
