About Allen Academy

Located in Bryan, Texas, near the highly-regarded Texas A&M University, Allen Academy emphasizes college preparation through rigorous academics, robust arts and a full range of athletic choices for its students. Motivated students will find, in this small school, excellent teachers who work closely with students to help them meet their educational goals and who challenge and stretch them at every stage of the learning process.

Allen Academy

Campus

Allen is located on a 40-acre campus about five miles from Texas A&M University. The campus consists of a main academic building, an activity center and cafeteria, a preschool, an activity gym, and a special events center that includes a newly renovated competition gym. Allen also has an impressive outdoor athletic complex with a record-keeping approved track and an artificial turf football and soccer field.

Allen boarding students live in a new boarding complex a couple of miles from the campus and are shuttled to school each day by the dorm parents. The boarding facility is located within walking distance to stores and restaurants and many other amenities in College Station.

Community

Allen Academy is committed to serving a globally diverse population. In 2011, Allen was home to 47 students from 18 different countries. About a third of these students live in the boarding facility. Much of Allen’s diversity is influenced by its proximity to Texas A&M University, which attracts research and teaching talent from across the globe.

The school is committed to participating in community activities, requiring community service hours and encouraging involvement in events offered throughout the year. Because of the school’s close proximity to Houston, students also have the opportunity to take advantage of resources in the U.S.’s fourth-largest city.

Academics

Allen offers a rigorous honors and Advanced Placement program. Our excellent teachers build relationships with every student based on mutual respect and trust. Our teachers invest significant amounts of time outside the classroom to present stimulating and challenging lessons to our students.

Our teacher to student ratio is capped at 18:1, but it is often much lower depending on the subject.

All Allen graduates go on to a four-year college and are prepared to embrace a wide range of opportunities both during and after their educational years.

Afternoon Activities

Allen Academy encourages its students to participate in after-school activities, especially team sports, which is an excellent way for international students to get to know their day school counterparts. Allen offers ample athletic opportunities including: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Since no student is cut from an Allen sports team, international students can explore a sport they may have never played before.

English Language Learning

Allen offers English language learning support. Students take a preliminary English competency test at the beginning of the year which determines the level of support needed. The school expects all international students to possess a high level of English proficiency, but recognizes that focused language teaching is often needed to help our students achieve their goals.

Residential Living

Allen Academy boarding students live in an off-campus facility approximately two miles from the school close to restaurants and shops. The boarding villas are furnished to a high standard. Each student has their own large bedroom with private bathroom. Three students share a living / dining room and a kitchen. All appliances, kitchenware and utensils, bed linens, and towels are provided. Lunches and evening meals during the week are provided, but students are responsible for providing their own breakfast every day and meals at weekends and during school holidays. Students are chaperoned by dorm parents who transport the students back and forth between campus and the boarding facility on a day to day basis and for all sports and extra-curricular events. The dorm parents are available 24 hours a day and are there to ensure the wellbeing of all students emotionally, physically and educationally. They are a contact point for both teachers and parents.

Excursions

Allen plans educational excursions during the fall and spring vacation times to expose international boarding students to different parts of Texas and the United States. These excursions are paid for separately from tuition and are a part of the school’s extra- curricular program.

Arriving and Leaving

The closest major airport to Bryan/ College Station is George Bush International Airport in Houston. The school will arrange transport to and from Houston by taxi. Many of our students arrange to fly into the local Easterwood Airport in College Station which is only a few miles from the school. This airport operates a shuttle service to and from Houston.

Tuition

$29,500 per school year for students entering 9th – 12th grades. This does not include the cost of books, uniform, health insurance or school organized trips during the fall and spring vacation times.

Admission

Students are admitted on the basis of previous school records, academic recommendations, an SSATB, TOEFL or SLEP test, an essay and a personal Skype interview.
