Overview:

Army and Navy Academy is an internationally recognized college-preparatory school for boys, grades 7-12 that follows University of California standards and incorporates leadership training. Since 1910, Army and Navy Academy has sought to develop scholarship and honorable character in young men.

Our cadets benefit from having a greater degree of structure, motivation and discipline in their daily routine. One of our core competencies is the academic achievement of our students. On a regular basis, we see students improve their G.P.A., often within the first semester of attendance. Small class sizes, a highly committed staff and individualized support enable students to achieve better results and improve their chances for attending a college or university of their choice. Mandatory leadership classes emphasize teamwork, honor, self-esteem, citizenship, study habits, and time management. Band, performing arts, extracurricular clubs, and CIF and intramural sports complement the academic program.

Our graduates attend top universities, with recent graduates currently attending M.I.T., John Hopkins, Rutgers, Penn State, USC, Boston University, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, UC Davis, UCSB, West Point, Annapolis and many other fine institutions.

Only 10 percent of academy graduates ultimately enlist in military service, and most of them do so as officers, after earning an undergraduate degree. Please note that that military service is not a requirement that is imposed on domestic or international students. The military infrastructure is used for leadership and character development purposes only.

Who Attends Army Navy?

Students come from 14 states and 15 countries, with approximately 24% international students and 76% domestic students.

International students gain the benefit of a three week ESL intensive before they begin school and a full year ESL class. International students are typically in the high-beginner or intermediate proficiency range. While some international students attend for one year, many attend the Academy for three or more years and then matriculate to top tier universities in the United States.

Academic Program

Since its inception in 1910, Army and Navy Academy has sought to develop scholarship and honorable character in young men. To achieve these results, the Academy demands high curriculum standards in combination with essential life management, good citizenship and leadership skills.

Small class sizes, a highly committed staff and individualized support set students up to succeed and prepare them for the university level. The Academic Department provides a variety of academic support services for cadets including daily tutorial after school, mandatory study time, evening office hours with teachers, and an academic counseling program. College planning, testing, and application preparation are all included as part of the curriculum in the Upper School.

Leadership Opportunities

Leadership opportunities at the Academy are plentiful. As they work together in the academic and athletic arenas, cadets learn how to become effective leaders.

Cadets drill together and have a cadet chain of command that effectively runs the corps of cadets, a hands-on instruction in leadership that molds character and sharpens interpersonal skills.

The young men have the opportunity to advance through the ranks and assume a position of leadership. These leadership positions are based upon real-world management positions in the outside world, and cadets learn marketable skills that are attractive to college recruiters and future employers.

Residential Life

Living at an all-boys boarding school allows cadets to socialize and build long-lasting friendships in an environment free of common external distractions. It allows a cadet to become his own person in a safe environment.

Safety and support are important at the Academy. Residential Life Officers oversee cadets in their company and serve as a cadet's mentor/advisor for all time spent outside of the classroom or athletics.

On the weekends, cadets are encouraged to stay on-campus and take local liberty around town or participate in a weekend activity. Weekend Activities vary in nature and include trips to local movies, shopping malls, theme parks, museums, sporting events or cadets can stay on campus and enjoy oceanfront activities and games in the recreation hall.

Athletics & Physical Training

Motivating young men to realize their full potential is the core mission of the Army and Navy Academy. With this in mind, the Academy imposes a requirement for all cadets to complete daily physical training or participate in a CIF sport or intramural club. This allows a cadet-athlete the opportunity to develop his self image, confidence, physical stamina and team spirit.
